Credit by Exam

College Station ISD provides credit by exam testing two times per year (one week in June and one week in July). Parents should contact the counselor at their child’s campus in late March to register for tests and to get information regarding the specific requirements of each grade level and or course.

To participate in Credit by Exam testing, a student must be enrolled in College Station ISD. All Credit by Exam testing is free of charge.

A brief synopsis of credit by examination opportunities follows.

  • Students who are not 5 years old by September 1, cannot complete a credit by exam to be enrolled in kindergarten.
  • Kindergarten

Students younger than 6 years old at the beginning of the school year who wish to skip Kindergarten (and be enrolled in first grade) must score at least the 90 th percentile on all sections of the ITBS Test (Level 6 – Complete Battery). Students must also be rated “acceptable” on the College Station ISD Informal Observation Instrument for Beginning Grade 1 Students.

  • Grades 1-5

Students may advance an entire grade level if they score 90 percent or above on criterion-referenced tests in ALL of the following areas for that grade level: language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Students who do not meet the 90% standard on all tests cannot skip that grade level. Review material is available here.

  • Grades 6-12

Students in grades 6-12 may receive credit for an academic subject in which the student has received no prior instruction if the student scores 90 percent or above on a criterion-referenced examination for the course. For full year courses, students must score 90% or above on both semester tests; scores are not averaged. Review material is available here.

Counselors at the middle school and high school can provide detailed information regarding specific restrictions on credit earned by correspondence courses and credit by exam for students in grades 6-12.
